As the game continues, other events transpire that require your skillful execution of other bad people. Turns out there’s a butcher that isn’t very particular about the meat he uses, and your goal is to put him down permanently. Since you’re understandably confused, Pedro explains why you’re there and what your goal is. Don’t expect how that’s possible to get explained, cause this isn’t that sort of game. This is more of a make and sandbox and throw the player in it sort of game.You start by waking up in an industrial facility next to a talking banana named Pedro. The trouble with the game is a simple lack of polish. This is good because the story campaign is only a few hours long. Unlocks found in the game add to the replayability. I found the slowing down of time, for example, to ruin my flow of shooting, jumping, dodging, and kicking. (What’s wrong with an A?) I didn’t bather with trying to kill with skill as the tagline for “Bulletstorm” used to say. Performance is ranked on a letter grade scale that includes S for best. (Is this a moral failing?) The real meta game is gunning for a high score. Instead, the protagonist could be let loose and I will kill anyone that looks like a bad guy. Honestly, the game did not need narrative device. You guide for the entire playthrough is a talking banana. Honestly, I am terrible at these kinds of games and I made it through the main story. The sandbox of tools makes the game approachable and replay able. The protagonist can also shoot, dual wield, toss explosives, and ricochet bullets. Starting My Friend Pedro feels like ending a Metroid game. The protagonist can dodge, roll, jump, swing, zip line, and slow down time. It's familiar yet fresh, and if you're at all interested, you should totally buy it. Ågren gets to do a bigger and better sequel with those things, but if not, this will suffice. More level variety, weapons, and especially moves/tricks to bring the baddies down. So why only an 8? The final product is a great pick-up-and-play game that unfortunately would benefit from more of everything. Max Payne is one of my all time favorites, and this reminded me of that magic. Slow motion is generous and feels top notch. Twist and turn through the air while aiming both hands at priority threats or line up a perfect ricochet to drop an unsuspecting gangster from behind. Unleash a torrent of destruction with an incredible level of control over both your weapons and your body.
